Expect some type of homework to be given every night except weekends and holidays. Each student is responsible for copying homework assignments from the board and into an agenda book. The students are responsible for taking home the necessary books or materials needed to complete the homework assignment. Henrico County requires no more than one hour of homework for a fifth grader. If your child is spending more than that amount of time, please make sure time is being used wisely. Each assignment should be put in your child's binder under the respective subject area. In case of an emergency and homework can not be completed, please send me a note letting me know so that there will be no in class consequence. Please check the homework agenda nightly.
The Behavior System-Bean Economy
During this school year, you will participate in a classroom economic system based upon beans. The beans will act as a representation, somewhat like money, for our economy. As fifth graders, you will each be given fifty beans to start. You will earn beans each week to add to your wealth, but as in the real world, you will have to pay taxes and rent.
There are seven denominations (colors) of beans.
These beans equal
These colors and denominations will be posted in our classroom.
You will be working each week to earn a weekly income of 225 beans. You earn this money by being prepared for school, having all homework in on time, cleaning your work area and cubby, doing your "job", and displaying positive behavior.
You can also be fined for any infraction in the classroom, hallway, or school rules, and will lose beans. The first 2 weeks, you will lose 10 beans per infraction. The fines will increase throughout the year as follows:
1st 9 weeks: 25 beans
2nd 9 weeks: 50 beans
3rd 9 weeks: 75 beans
4th 9 weeks: 100 beans
Just like the real world, you will also pay a weekly rent of 25 beans for the use of work areas, supplies, the building, playground, ect. Taxes will also be taken once a week in the amount of 20 beans.
Please remember, any teacher may award beans for a job well done, and they may also take away beans for any reason they think appropriate.
During the school year, you will be given various opportunities to earn and spend beans. To facilitate the ease of keeping track of earned and lost beans, I will also be using ClassDojo. You will be able to check your daily points and know how many extra beans you can expect with your payday at the end of the week!
