I am so excited to be your child's virtual learning fifth grade teacher. Here are some norms that may help with Virtual Learning. Please know I am going to do everything in my power to be there for your child and help them through each and every hurdle as they arise. We may have some hiccups the first week or so, but I know with your support and through our working together, we will be able to ensure your child is getting the very best out of this virtual platform.
Before School:
Our virtual school day starts at 8:10 a.m., so it may be wise for your child to begin to log in around 8:05 to ensure that the computer is ready to go.
Class Time:
To help your child keep up with their schedule, I suggest a timer or physical print out of a schedule with a digital clock for them to use. A lot of students respond positively to setting timers and alarms to help them go through their assignments and their day.
Show up to each class each day on time. When you enter class you may greet your teacher and classmates. When the teacher begins instruction, mute your microphone and remain muted until the teacher calls on you.
Breaks:
We have 5 minute breaks between each class. Please use these breaks to log into your next class and get something to drink and/or use the restroom.

- Begin the day with a fully charged computer and have the computer charger nearby.
- Show up dressed appropriately in accordance with the dress code.

- During class, remain focused on the lesson and on the screen, not using other apps or playing other games unless specifically instructed by the teacher.
- Appropriate participation is expected.
- Chat should only be used for appropriate teacher questions and/or responses, not social chatting with classmates.
- Use the hand button to raise your hand to ask/answer a question. This is not an automatic button and your teacher can not put your hand down for you, please put your hand down after you have been acknowledged.
Breaks:
We have 5 minute breaks between each class. Please use these breaks to log into your next class and get something to drink and/or use the restroom.
- Make sure to get up and move, eat a snack, and use the bathroom during breaks.
- Keep an eye on your timer during breaks and make sure to be back with your camera turned on before the timer runs out.
- Lunch and recess are on your own. Enjoy! During lunch and recess, the meetings will end. Students are expected to log back into their homeroom class on time.
Homework
- Any homework assigned is to be completed and turned in by the due date. Your child will have very little homework and they must check the Daily Task Checklist to make sure that they are completing all work that was assigned during the school day. If something did not get completed, it is expected that they will finish it and have it ready for submission the following day.
Absences:
- Inform your teacher beforehand if you know you will not be able to attend class.
- If you are absent, it is expected that you watch the recordings of the classes you missed, if available, and complete all the work missed for that class or day.
Technology:
- If you have difficulty getting to the meeting, or if you get kicked out of a class meeting, reclick the link to try to rejoin. If this does not work, message that teacher through Schoology and let them know. You may work on your independent practice work if your internet connection allows. Periodically, try to rejoin the class by retrying the link.
- If the teacher seems to accidentally leave the meeting, remain in the meeting and wait for the teacher to return. If she doesn’t return within two to five minutes, look for a message in Schoology from the teacher. Something has happened with her internet connection and computer and she will attempt to rejoin you from her phone or some other way.
