This week we are collecting gently used books as part of a community outreach project. If you have any that you would like to donate, please just send them in with your child. Mrs. Dedek and Mrs. Ewell will take care of the rest.
Tomorrow is going to be Club Picture Day. Usually these pictures are taken in the spring along with class pictures, but due to earlier yearbook deadlines, they need to be made now. Any clubs or organizations that your child is involved in may be photographed. Examples are Book Bowl, Green Team, Friendly Helpers, Safety Patrol, ect.
We are on the final countdown to the writing test. In order to brush up on all the mechanics of writing, I will be giving a pretest on certain skills. If your child makes a 100 on the pretest, he or she will not need to do the homework. There are generally five days of lessons/homework and then a final test. After the final lesson, the test will count as the grade for that skill.
Also, coming home is a writing skills lesson. All students will be responsible for completing this assignment. They will be given at least 2 nights to do each assignment. These lessons will focus on the composing aspect of writing and will help to boost the composing and written expression portions of your child's writing. At the top of each sheet is a tip and a letter to you so you can see how to best help with the skill we are using in class. You will see the first lesson (Writing Tip #9) tomorrow.
In math we will be starting with fractions very soon. We have been looking at fractions used as ratios and also working with proportional reasoning.
In science we are almost finished with our unit on Living Systems. The cell projects and most wanted posters were really great! There will be a test sometime next week that will cover the cells and also the 2 main types of animals and plants.
Benchmarks are currently being given. Today, your child took the reading test. On Thursday, they will have math. Science is scheduled for Wed. 2/6, with writing finishing us up on Monday 2/11. Thanks for helping to make sure your child gets a good night's rest the night before.
