Graded paper folders were sent home on Friday, and I only got about 10 back today. Please check with your child to see the important papers inside. This includes a purple sheet about the 1/2 day and a lunch order form if you would like for your child to bring a lunch home with them that afternoon. The field trip permission form is also in the graded paper folder.
This week in Math we will continue working with SOL 5.18. Your child should be able to label all the parts of an equation and write expressions to go with word problems. They are also substituting a value in for x and solving an expression. The test on this will be on Friday.
I am excited to have begun our new novel study groups! The four novels we are reading are: Number the Stars, Bridge to Terabithia, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, and A Wrinkle in Time. Everyone got their novel today and should be reading through Chapter 1. All of the work that they are expected to do for the week has been uploaded to Schoology, so they can work on it at home as well as school. There will be a quiz on the chapters that they are expected to read on Fridays. I am anticipating that the novels will take around 5 weeks to complete. Feel free to have your child log into Schoology and show you the questions that they are answering about their novel. This is also an easy way to check that they are completing all of their work for the novel during the week, since each assignment has a due date that will be listed on the right side of their screen.
This afternoon after school all 3-5th grade teachers had training on an EXCELLENT resource to help improve your child's NWEA MAPs score: ExactPath. I am going to start assigning 20 minutes of math homework in exact path every night in addition to the worksheet that will practice skills that we are reviewing in class. Your child has a user name and log in and should know how to access this wonderful resource.
Also, don't forget, our Book Fair is this Saturday, March 3rd at Barnes and Noble at Short Pump! Faculty and staff will be reading books beginning at 12 pm until 3 pm! Your child should have brought home a green flyer today with more information and a code. If you can't make it to the book fair, you can always order online using the code on the flyer so that SPES will get credit for your order.
