In math, we are still working with the Fraction Speed Bumps. I am happy to say that the students have had an assessment on adding fractions and they did very well. We have moved on to subtracting fractions and mixed numbers this week, and are on track to finish up by the middle of next week.
In science, we finally were able to take the unit test on matter. We have moved on to one of my favorite weeks in class and are conducting science experiments to learn how to tell if a chemical reaction has occurred. So far, we have talked about reactants and products. Today's challenge was to combine sodium carbonate with a citric acid solution and dish washing soap to see if the foam that was created could be stopped at the top of the beaker. It was very challenging and I think the students enjoyed it. I have been taking pictures along the way, so I will update the photo page shortly. Tomorrow they will be working with chemical reactions and color change to see what the pH of solutions that they have made is.
In writing we are finally working with a formal independent research project. Your child has already had a lot of experience with research this year with Genius Hour, but this is taking it to the next level and allowing them to formalize their research into a paper and product of their choosing. A detailed description of expectations and a calendar are coming home tomorrow. Most of the research and writing will be done in class. The project and a tri-fold board will be done at home.
Please remember that Friday is a half day. We will also have BAT day that day. If your child would like to watch a movie, please remember to send in the permission slip. If they have misplaced the slip, a note from you giving them permission to watch the movie of their choice will suffice.
