This week in reading, the skill we are working on is "Making Predictions". The students have been reading a letter written by a girl who is visiting Belize and are making predictions about what she may write in her next letter. The students are also enjoying Wonder, our read aloud book. We are practicing making predictions as well as talking some about figurative language as they listen to the story. They are also working with Lesson 1 in Wordly Wise. This is an excellent program that allows them to boost their vocabulary as well as explore multiple meanings of different words. This will be done over a two week period and will hopefully give your child a chance to use words in a different way. I've already seen evidence of a student using one of the words in his writing this week!
In math, we are still working with computation. Please have your student review with flash cards at least 3-4 times a week. This will help keep the recall of math facts fluid as well as build confidence when they are trying to solve more difficult math problems. We will be moving onto division with 2 digit divisors as we begin next week.
In science, we are almost finished with our unit on the scientific method. We will be using this constantly as we go through the rest of the year, but this is the only time that it is explicitly taught. Next week we will start our Henrico History Unit in Social Studies.
Finally, here is a special treat: a quick video of our first few weeks of school! I hope you enjoy it!
