Important Dates & Events:
Enrichment & Extension Activities for October
Click here to access the optional October enrichment board for students who are interested in extending their learning beyond what we are covering in the classroom. Each month an enrichment board will focus on a different theme. The theme for the month of October is Balance. Students will also be able to find the link to this engaging menu in their Homeroom course in Schoology this week.
Virtual Parent/ Teacher Conferences
This year we will be having virtual Parent/Teacher conferences between 3:30-6:30 on Monday, November 2. A sign up went out last week. Even though your child has two teachers this year, you will only need to sign up with their homeroom teacher. We are working together to ensure that you will receive feedback on your child’s progress in both classrooms. Spots will be limited due to the numbers of students and parents that we need to accommodate. If you do not have any immediate concerns or questions about your child’s progress and have not heard about any concerns from your child’s teachers, please feel free to send an email to see if you need one on one conference time.
What are we learning next week with Mrs. Gosney?
Math- This week the math 5 students will begin with a review of computational skills using whole numbers. Math 5/6 students will finish up working with Order of Operations and have a test on Tuesday. This will depend on how well we can finish the concept tomorrow in class. The test may be moved to Wednesday, but they will know by the conclusion of the day what the plan will be. When they are finished with their test, they, too, will be working on a review of computational skills using whole numbers.
Science- We will be beginning our exploration of the 5th grade SOL of Oceans. This week will include lessons on the geography of the ocean floor.
What are we learning next week with Mrs. Toth?
Reading- Last week, we extended our theme practice and pushed our study of the reading Signposts to this week. Signposts are handy tools readers can utilize while reading. These signposts are simply signals to alert students to pay attention to what they are reading and then stop to note what that signal might mean. Students will receive a new independent work menu with this week’s assignments that they will work on during class. Important due dates and explanations of assignments are located on this document. Your child will be able to access this document by going to their Reading course and clicking on the Materials section. The menu will be in this week’s folder that will be labeled, October 26th-30th. I will explain everything on this menu in class. The menu will be posted Monday or Tuesday morning (at the latest).
English- We will practice pre-writing strategies and begin to draft a descriptive piece using juicy adjectives, adverbs, and vivid verbs discussed in class. We will review how to correctly use quotation marks within our writing pieces when sharing dialogue between characters.
Social Studies- We will continue to explore Henrico History by studying slides 7-17 in our slideshow for Henrico History Part 1. Students will have a test on this material next Thursday, November 5th. The slideshow will be found in the materials section of your child’s Social Studies course in this week’s folder.
