I can not believe that the end of 2012 is upon us! It has been a super fast year. Tomorrow is our end of unit science test. Encourage them to study the notes that they have taken in class as well as the study guide. Math MAPS testing did not happen as scheduled on Monday due to server issues, but are due to occur on Thursday. Because of this, I am going to wait until January to do the end of unit math test on variables. In the meantime, you can work with your child on making up word problems to match expressions in order to maintain what they have learned. I will also put up some exercises on ten marks so that they can practice over the break.
Today a volunteer coordinator from the Virginia Home came into our classroom to thank the children for volunteering to help out by wrapping presents during their party on Friday. She explained what the Virginia Home is and what the residents there are able to do. On Thursday, the class will be making gingerbread houses. Thank you so much for your generous donations! I am going to put up an nlist for volunteers to come and stuff the bags so that the kits are ready to go. I will also love to have some copies run that I will need for when we come back after the break. On Friday, we will be having the Jingle Bell Jog! Please have your child bring a bell to wear during the activity. Also, later that afternoon is the Winter Party. If your child will be having a change in dismissal this day, you can go ahead and send the note in and I will let the office know. If I don't get a chance to see you before the Winter Break, please know that I wish you and your family a very relaxing and peaceful time surrounded by family and friends!

Whew! The science project is finally done! I know you're relieved too. I was impressed with all of the top notch projects that were shared with me. And look forward to reading your child's reflection on the projects to see what their thoughts are about their learning during the process.
Today you should have received your child's interim. Please review the report, sign it, and send it back to school with your child as soon as possible. Starting tomorrow in math we will begin working on variables and equations. This is a fun unit and one of my favorites! I hope that your child will find it enjoyable as well. In science we started talking about fossils today. We will do some exploration of the subject and even make one of our own in the next few days. An end of unit test will be coming up before the end of next week. Writing is going very well and our big focus in the coming weeks will be on revising and editing. I have such great writers in my class, but I feel like they can "give me more" when it comes to elaborating. Also, next week, we will be doing a gingerbread house design challenge in the classroom. I will be posting a bulletin on nlist soon asking for donations to help with the project. I'm sure it will be a great time! |
