Our aquatic safety field trip will be this month! Please ask your child for the permission slip packet. There are 3 pages that need to be read, initialed and signed. Please go through all the pages and ensure that you have marked the appropriate places so you will not have to redo the paperwork. The papers and the $4 fee is due Jan. 12.
Middle school madness will start soon. Next week, we have our field trip to Pocahontas and your child will be able to tour the school and find out more about middle school life. Then YOU are invited to a question and answer session about course paths for core classes and the long term goals in relation to academic and career plans on Thursday, January 11 at 7 p.m.
I will also be doing middle school recommendations soon. I will be sending a form home with your child for you to fill out and return to me. While I can take your request into account, please remember that there are specific guidelines I must follow when recommending students for classes. If you would like to speak with me about it, let's try to make contact now instead of during parent teacher conferences since that will be after my recommendation window closes.
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, January 18 for our annual "Snow Show" put on by the fifth grade chorus! The students have been working very hard on the show and are excited to show it off to their parents.
In math this week, we are learning how to convert fractions into decimals. Today, I introduced the division method. Your child should have a note sheet glued into his/her notebook along with notes that give a step by step guide of how to solve the division problem. Please look over it with him/her and work with them to ensure understanding. After the students get proficient at converting the fractions into decimals, we will compare and order fractions and decimals. Calculators are NOT allowed on this SOL strand! A test will occur sometime next week, but no date has been set. As soon as I determine the date, I will add it to the 5th grade calendar.
In reading, you child came home with a Smart Phone Book Report instruction page and rubric yesterday. Please go over the guidelines with your child and ensure that they are reading every night in order for them to be ready to turn in the project on the due date of January 31.
