March has certainly come in like a lion! I am ready for some lamb-like spring weather! Hopefully that is not too far out now!
If you tried to email me yesterday between 4 p.m. and 11 a.m. this morning, the county email server was down and all emails were bounced. Please resend check to see if you need to resend any messages to me. The Reading Raiser is well underway! Last week, our class won the recognition for the most participation, but it was still a very low number. Please have your child log in to log their books. They DO NOT have to participate in the fundraising side of the event if they do not wish too. The can log the time they are spending reading since that is a nightly expectation for homework. I have also put to "log your books!" as the direction for their reading assignment for me. If your child needs his user name or password, feel free to shoot me an email and I will get it to you. The rescheduled days for the Writing SOL is coming up quickly. The multiple choice will be held on Monday, 3/24 and the direct writing prompt is on Wednesday, 3/26. Next week is going to be very busy! A TDAP clinic will be held at school next Tuesday. Your child may get the shot here at school that day or you can opt to get it at their family physician on your schedule. However, the TDAP shot is required to enter 6th grade. Students brought home paperwork on March 6th. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Piper, our school nurse. Next Wednesday is Family Life. If your child opted out, they will stay in the classroom with supervision. This is a make-up from February. And finally, next Thursday is our aquatic safety field trip. Students will need to bring a packed lunch along with a bathing suit, towel and plastic bag for their wet suits. Individual student pictures came home last Friday. Thank you if you have sent them back or already paid for them. These pictures either need to be purchased or brought back to school. If you have paid for the pictures online, please send me an email so that I can keep track of who has purchased them. We have finally started our new unit in Math! Fraction Speed Bumps is underway! We will be studying fractions and using what we learn to build ramps to race marbles. Your child will be working cooperatively to deepen their understanding of fractions. I am excited about this unit as it looks to be a very good way for the students to brush up on their fraction skills while also having fun. We will be finishing up our unit on Matter soon. We will be starting Mixtures and Solutions tomorrow. A test on the entire matter unit will be given next Tuesday. Please make sure that your child is working on their Adopt an Element project at home. These are due Monday. They have done most of their research in class and should create the advertisement at home. When they finish them, they are more than welcome to turn them in early. In writing, I am conferencing with each student to make sure that they feel comfortable with the writing prompts. We are going over a piece that they have written and I am giving any suggestions that I feel would make the writing better. I am very pleased with the responses to the prompts that I have seen so far. Soon we will be pushing Genius Hour to a whole new level! After the Writing SOL is over, we will be kicking off our Genius Hour Research Project. This is going to be what your child will present during our STREAM PTA meeting in May. Your child will get to pick a topic to research and together we will work through creating questions and doing research to find the answers. I am excited to see what they will pick to be their final project to share with everyone on the PTA night. More information is to come on this as Ms. Fitz, Mrs. Bernheart, Mr.
