This week, your child has a field trip to PMS on Wednesday. There is no cost for this trip and we will be back in time to eat lunch at our school. Also this week, I will be out Tuesday-Thursday for a minor surgery. I hope to return on Friday. Please remind your child that even if I am not there, I have spent hours preparing lessons for a substitute and they are expected to behave as if it were me teaching the lessons. They will be graded on the work that they are doing during this time.
Math: We are finishing up our unit on circles. There will be a test on Thursday of this week. We will begin working with perimeter, area, and volume after this.
Reading: Our focus is on small groups right now. You child is reading their novels independently and are coming together as a group to discuss them and complete assignments in their contracts related to what they are reading. I am hoping to finish all of the novels before Spring Break!
Writing: Next Monday will be the county HATS test that takes the place of the fifth grade writing test that is no longer given by the state. This should help to keep a pulse on the skills that your child should be proficient in by the end of fifth grade. Please make sure they are completing the nightly homework in writing in preparation for the test.
Science: We are working on my favorite unit: Matter! There will be a short answer quiz next Tuesday, 3/22 on atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds. Then, the final test on 5.4 will be next Friday, 3/25.
Social Studies: When we return from Spring Break, we will begin studying the Northeast region of the United States. Your child will learn about what makes this region unique.
