Next Thursday is our Back to School Night. Please plan to join us in the gym at 6:30 to learn more about our day! Mrs. McGee, Ms. Powell, and I will be meeting with all of our parents in the gym after the general meeting so that we can answer any questions you might have and leave you with time to attend another session for a different student you might have.
Safety continues to be Short Pump Elementary School’s top priority, and this year, we hope that you can support us in this effort as well. Please consider donating to the Stinger Fund, which is comprised of direct donations to support instruction and this year safety as well. We need to raise over at least $15,000 collectively to reach our goal. The way we figure it is if each family in my class donates at least $25, it will cover instructional materials of my classroom that the PTA financially provides each year and allows me to have a walkie talkie, an enhanced security measure. Thank you for consideration!
I am sending home book orders today. Please browse through the flyers and see if there are any books that catch your child's eye. Ordering is easy through the website. Our class code is GWLMV If your child didn't grab a catalog on the way out this afternoon, you can always browse online with them.
Henrico Explorers
Fifth-Graders in Henrico County are invited to participate in the Henrico Explorers program in which students visit historic sites in Henrico County with family members or friends. Students who have permission to participate will receive a passport in which they will document evidence of visiting each site. If a student documents visits to at least 8 sites before the end of June, he or she will be eligible to receive a free t-shirt. Permission forms to participate in this family experience were sent home Thursday. They must be completed and returned to school by this Friday, Sept. 21 in order for students to receive their passports.
Math:
I am postponing the math test that was scheduled for Friday until Tuesday. There will be one more day of instruction on finding prime and composite numbers before I assess their mastery of the subject. After we have the test, we are going to be moving onto Integers. Topics included with this are:
- The idea of whole numbers being positive and negative.
- Zero is neither positive nor negative.
- The farther you go to the left on a number line, the less the number is worth.
- The farther you go to the right on a number line, the more a number is worth.
