What are we learning next week with Mrs. Gosney?
Math- We will be wrapping up our study of Integers. Your child should understand that some numbers are positive and have an opposite number that is negative. They have learned that the farther to the left a number falls on the number line, the less this number is. So, they are able to compare both positive and negative integers. The final thing they will learn about this week is absolute value. This is simply how far a number is from zero and is never negative. I will mention the special circumstances when the negative sign is on the outside of the vertical bars. I anticipate being finished on Thursday and will have a quiz on Friday.
Science- I was very pleased with the results of the layers of the earth and plate tectonics quiz. This week we will continue our study of geology with the three types of rocks and the rock cycle. Topics will include the three types of rocks and how they are formed. We will touch on weathering, erosion, and deposition, as well as fossils. A quiz will be on Monday, 10/5. A unit test will be sometime during that week as well. The students will also have a choice project that will be due 10/9 that will allow them to creatively showcase their understanding of geology.
What are we learning next week with Mrs. Toth?
Reading- Students will practice summarizing plot events using details from provided texts. They will create a “plot mountain” that will note rising conflict, the climax of the story, and the resolution. We will have a quiz on this material on Friday, October 2nd. Students are reminded to log into Lexia during our independent station work time in order to meet their weekly usage requirements. I will continue to meet 1:1 with students to assess their reading strengths and areas for improvement.
English- We will finish our sensory poems and continue to practice pre-writing strategies. Students will participate in Word Talks throughout the week and explore how affixes can be added to the beginning or ending of a base word to create a new word with a new meaning.
Social Studies- We will continue our exploration of Henrico geography by exploring the water features of Henrico County. We will also take a closer look at the climate and roads of early Henrico County. Students will have a detailed slideshow and several interactive activities that we will use to delve deeper into this content. They will have a quiz on this information next Tuesday, October 6th.
