Hello Stinger Families!
We hope everyone is staying warm and enjoying their Valentine’s Day! Students will not need to log on tomorrow, February 15th, due to the icy conditions. Please review the newsletter below for materials needed, important dates, and concepts we will cover throughout the next week:
Materials Needed This Week:
Art Class- Students will need paper, a pencil, and something to add color.
HLP Block- red, pink, and white construction paper and scissors
Important Dates & Events:
- Feb. 15th-26th- Middle School Classes-Don’t forget to sign up for classes at Pocahontas MS! The window for online Course Requests is February 15-26, 2021. The Portal will be open for parents by 7:00 AM on Monday, February 15, and it will be closed at 10:00 PM on Friday, February 26. Directions to sign up for classes are here. Every 5th grader will need to sign up for classes at Pocahontas MS, even if you are planning on going to Moody or GYSA. - 2020-21 Yearbooks are coming! To order your yearbook, Login to www.TreeRing.com/validate. Enter our school’s passcode: 1015561196712105 and follow the instructions to create an account and order a yearbook. We want to include everyone in the yearbook this year, so please submit pictures of your stingers learning at home. See flyer attached for directions. If you were unable to attend SPES Picture Day, please also submit a picture of your child with a plain background to the TreeRing site (directions on flyer attached). - If your child is returning to school in-person there are additional forms and documents that are required. Please be on the lookout for a separate communication with distribution dates for this required paperwork.
Reading- We will wrap up our whole group study of text structures with a quiz on Wednesday. Students will continue to work on different structures during small group time. Later in the week, we will begin our study of media messages. We will learn how media messages are constructed and for what purposes. Students will work on their Independent Work Menu which will be posted to this week’s reading folder in Schoology.
English- Students will create a class valentine on Tuesday that they will share with each other. (This activity has been moved to Tuesday due to our snow days!) Students will also learn about comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs and how to correctly use them within their writing.
Social Studies- We will continue to explore the physical features, resources, and other unique characteristics of the Southeast region. The assessment originally scheduled for this Wednesday, the 17th, has been moved to Monday, February 22nd. Students will be permitted to use their notes/ slideshow to answer the questions that will be provided.
What are we learning next week with Mrs. Gosney?
Math- We will continue working with fractions this week. Along with simplifying and finding the GCF and LCM, your child will begin adding and subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators. This will include the skill of regrouping.
Science- This week we will be continuing our study of Matter. Please let your child know that we will do the science experiment that was sent home with the fifth grade packets on Friday. I know the kids are looking forward to it! If your child has already completed the experiment, that is okay. I will be doing it as well and they can just follow along.
