I have also put an n-list requesting some supplies for upcoming design challenges that I have planned over the next few weeks. The students are going to be making earthquake proof structures, demonstrating faults, and creating gingerbread houses. The gingerbread houses will be on display along with the projects that your child is working on in Mrs. Bernheart's class. More details will follow about the exact time of the event, but tentatively plan to join us in the morning of December 18.
We have started our unit on collecting, organizing, displaying, and using data in math. The week started with line graphs, we have moved on to stem and leaf plots, and will finish the week out with different measures of center, including mean, median, mode and range. We will continue with this through next week and a test is tentatively scheduled for Friday, December 12.
In science, we have also started with our new unit on Geology. Your child has been asking some interesting questions about the layers of the earth. We are going to be learning about different types of faults and what occurs along each of them. We will also explore different types of rocks and the rock cycle. After that, we will end the unit with some information about fossils and human impact on the earth's environment. A unit test will be given on December 17.
This week in writing, we have taken off some time from the formal writing process and are working instead on executive functions. We have discussed engaged listening and why it is important to be an engaged listener not only at school, but in other areas as well. Today we played a game today that showed some of the benefits of engaged listening. We will be working on following directions throughout the rest of the week.
The Reading MAPS test went very well today. The Math MAPS test will be next Tuesday morning.
