This week is Dr. Seuss Week! We are celebrating each day with a new theme.
Monday~Read Across America Day
Bring in your favorite stuffed animal or book to share with the class! (Since this is going out on Monday, the students can combine this day with Tuesday's activities!)
Tuesday~Top Hat Tuesday
Wear your favorite hat!
Wear your pajamas! Please make sure that pajamas are school appropriate and not see thru. House shoes may not be worn.
Dress like your favorite Dr. Seuss character!
Friday~ Grinch Green Friday
Participation in any or all activities is completely voluntary and up to the student! We are just looking for a fun way to celebrate reading and Dr. Seuss!
Speaking of celebrating reading, our Learn2Earn fundraiser has begun! The students have all signed up in class today to log their books! We are participating in this as a class, but the link to a parent account will only be done with your permission at home. If you do not want your child to participate in the fundraising aspect of it, they do not have to. They are still encouraged to log their books in order to help the class's goals and averages. A yellow sheet with more information and how to log in was passed out today and should be coming home in your child's graded paper folder this afternoon.
Our annual Barnes & Noble Book Fair is Beginning Saturday! To kick off the celebration, there will be a Book Fair Block Party at the Downtown Short Pump Shopping Center on Sat, March 7, from Noon to 7 p.m. Tell Johnny Rockets, Two Guys Pizza, Sweet Frog and the Barnes & Noble Cafe that you are with Short Pump Elementary and a portion of your check will be donated to the school! After you've dined, head over to Barnes & Noble to shop for your favorite books, games, toys, magazines, movies, CDs, and more! Remember to bring your book fair vouchers! They are on the back of the flyer coming home this afternoon.
Graded paper folders were supposed to go out Friday, Feb. 20, but due to snow, they were delayed. So, instead of trying to wait until Friday to send them home, I am going to go ahead and send them today. Your child should have 10 papers in them for you to see. Thank you for signing these and returning the yellow sheet by Wednesday. If your child has them tomorrow, he/she will get a dojo point for returning the folder promptly.
Today we wrapped up or units in math on elapsed time, prime, composite, even, and odd numbers, and coordinate planes with a unit test. We will begin working with ratios next and from there progress into fractions. This unit of study should take a few weeks to complete.
In science we are still studying matter. Your child has learned about protons, electrons, and neutrons. He knows about atomic numbers and atomic mass and how to use them to find the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom. They have also learned a silly song that is sung to the tune of "The Addams Family" to help them keep the different parts of an atom straight. Ask them to sing it for you!
In writing we are concentrating on usage and mechanics this nine weeks. We have worked with commas and are continuing our work with dialogue and quotation marks. Please review any papers coming home with your child. Quotation marks can be tricky!
