As we fly through the last few weeks before winter break, here is what we will be working on.
Math: Your child has been working with graphing data and also knows how to make a stem and leaf plot. We will continue working with these skills over the next week and will add the concepts of mean, median, mode, and range to the mix. Tomorrow they will learn a silly song to help them remember the definition of each one. Ask them to sing it to you, if they sing it to me at recess, they can earn a dojo point! The test is scheduled for next Friday, December 11. After that, they will be doing a design challenge to create a gingerbread house. Check out my n-list to see if there is anything that you can send in to help us have plenty of building materials. Thank you to those of you who have already signed up! Keep those supplies coming. :-)
Science: We have started our geology unit. The room is really moving and shaking! We've learned all about the layers of the Earth and the earth's plates. There will be a quick quiz on the material tomorrow. Today, we've made a simulation of the earth's plates using graham crackers and icing. I'm letting the students bring them home to eat if you allow them to. I have Honey Maid Graham Crackers and Betty Crocker icing for them to use.
Social Studies: We are almost finished with our Henrico History study. The students have gone through the entire book learning about our county. Next week we will focus on map skills and longitude and latitude.
Reading: Students are still enjoying the StoryWorks magazine. They are all working on their level of activities as all of the activities that come with the magazines are leveled.
Writing: This week we are using our writing time to conduct the class spelling bee. We will have a winner tomorrow afternoon. Next week the students will be working on a prompt of their choice. We started this on Monday, but had to bump it next week due to the timeline of the spelling bee.
