In math we are wrapping up the odds and ends and will be working with elapsed time, prime, composite, even, and odd numbers, and numbers on a coordinate plane before we begin our big unit on fractions. We are also working with the program, "You Can Do The Cube!" to learn how to do the Rubik's Cube! It's great and many of the kids have already figured it out! They are all really excited to try the methods presented and see how they really can figure out the Rubik's Cube!
In science we are finishing up our study of Living Systems. The students will have a unit test on Friday. They should use their notebooks to review for the test as it contains all of the information that they will need to know. If you are by the school and happen to be in the fifth grade hallway, check out the awesome "Wanted" posters the students made to advertise for a misbehaving cell. Up next is my favorite unit: Matter! We get to play with chemistry at the end as our culminating activity! It's so much fun!
In writing, we are really working on the mechanics of good writing. The last week has been full of work with commas and next week we will begin working with quotation marks. I also plan to have them choose a prompt to write to in order to practice written composition.
Middle school information has come home now and you should have signed up for the powerschool parent portal. This will allow you to see the classes that have been assigned for your child next year. You will also be able to choose which elective your child would like to take next year.
