Interims and graded paper folders will be coming home on Thursday, March 12. Please sign the interim and have your child bring it back on Friday. You may keep all graded papers at home.
Last week your child brought home a course selection form that needs to be signed and returned. This form will need to be signed and turned in by Thursday, March 12. It should be returned regardless of which HCPS middle school your child is planning on attending.
Also, the t-dap forms are due to Mrs. Piper in the clinic. If you have already made alternate plans for your child to receive the immunization, please return the form with just your child's name on it to the clinic. If the form has been misplaced, you may write a note to Mrs. Piper letting her know that you are opting out of the immunization at school. However, if you need a form because you would like for your child to receive the immunization here, please have your child go to the clinic tomorrow to pick up another form to bring home to you.
We will be having family life Wednesday, March 25. Opt out forms were sent home on Monday. If you would prefer for your child to not participate, please send the form back as soon as possible.
The fifth grade writing test will be given next Wednesday, March 18. It will test your child on usage and mechanics as well as written expression and composing. There will not be a written component to the test, but instead questions will be given in a multiple choice or TEI (technology enhanced item) format. If you would like to give your child practice in addition to what we are doing in class, you can go here to find released fifth grade SOL tests. Scroll down the page and choose any of the grade 5 writing multiple choice tests. You do not need to worry about the prompts. Also, the standardized test writing practice packets we have been doing in class are an ideal thing to review.
In math we are working with ratios, fractions, decimals, and percents. A key understanding is being able to change fractions into decimals and vice versa. We have spent time on this in class and your child should know 2 ways in which to do this. Later this week we will add in percents and a test is expected on Monday.
In science the students are finishing up a baby book project on an element that they have chosen. I am excited to see their finished products when they present them on Friday. They will have class time tomorrow to finish up any slides that may still need work. If they have already finished, they will be engaged in a webquest activity to learn more about elements and compounds.
