I can not believe that May is here! It seems like just yesterday was January 1! As the year keeps speeding by, we are working hard in 306. We are almost done with all of the standards that we have to cover for the state in both Math and Science. Once we are finished, I have some interesting enrichment projects planned to keep us learning until the very end of school.
One of the projects came home today. I'm sure you noticed the nice board that most of the students brought home today. The boards were generously donated and cut by the Home Depot on Broad Street near our school. This board is going to be used to do some string art to enhance our concept of geometric shapes. Right now, all that your child needs to do with the board is decide whether they would like to paint it or leave it as it is. Either way is fine. They can use any type or color of paint to paint the board if that is what they choose to do. In the next few weeks, we'll be working with line designs and circles to make stars. We'll also explore parabolas on a coordinate grid. Then, they will get to decide which design they would like to create for their board. Then we'll work together to create the boards before the last day of school. If you happen to be at Hobby Lobby or A.C. Moore and want to pick up the string for the project, you child has complete creative control and can choose whatever color(s) of string that they would like to use. I recommend using crochet yarn as it is thinner than knitting yarn, and won't take up as much room on the nails. I can not wait to see what creative ideas they will come up with. After a look at our schedule, we will have a probability test on Monday, 5/6, and a test on light in Science on Friday (5/3). The students know this and it has been on the homework board for the past two nights. Mr. Driscoll will be giving the students in his homeroom the test on Friday if they do not come to me because of the field trip. Also, a data checkpoint is scheduled on the Experimental Design Project for Friday (5/3). This does not mean that the experiment should be completely finished and ready to turn in. I just want to see any data that your child has collected at this point. If your child hasn't begun the project, please have them write a plan that shows how they are going to go about finishing up the project on time.
