Enrichment & Extension Activities for October
Click here to access the optional October enrichment board for students who are interested in extending their learning beyond what we are covering in the classroom. Each month an enrichment board will focus on a different theme. The theme for the month of October is Balance. Students will also be able to find the link to this engaging menu in their Homeroom course in Schoology this week.
Virtual Parent/ Teacher Conferences
This year we will be having virtual Parent/Teacher conferences between 3:30-6:30 on Monday, November 2. A sign up will be coming to you tomorrow to choose a time that works best for your family. Even though your child has two teachers this year, you will only need to sign up with their homeroom teacher. We are working together to ensure that you will receive feedback on your child’s progress in both classrooms. Spots will be limited due to the numbers of students and parents that we need to accommodate. If you do not have any immediate concerns or questions about your child’s progress and have not heard about any concerns from your child’s teachers, please feel free to send an email to see if you need one on one conference time.
What are we learning next week with Mrs. Toth?
Reading- We will discuss the theme of selected texts and explore how the theme is often a message, or lesson, from the story one can apply to his or her own life. We will also talk about the importance of using “signposts” while reading. These signposts are simply signals to alert students to pay attention to what they are reading and then stop to note what that signal might mean. Students will receive a new independent work menu with this week’s assignments that they will work on during class. Important due dates and explanations of assignments are located on this document. Your child will be able to access this document by going to their Reading course and clicking on the Materials section. The menu will be in this week’s folder that will be labeled, October 19-23th. I will explain everything on this menu in class. The menu will be posted Monday or Tuesday morning (at the latest).
English- Students will utilize vivid verbs to enhance their writing pieces. We will practice pre-writing strategies and draft a descriptive piece using juicy adjectives, adverbs, and vivid verbs discussed in class.
Social Studies- We will continue to explore Henrico History by studying why the English settlers chose the site of Henricus and learn about several individuals who made contributions to the history of Henrico. We will focus mainly on the first six slides of our slideshow. Our quiz on the vocabulary and first six slides has been moved to Thursday, October 22rd. The slideshow will be found in the materials section of your child’s Social Studies course in this week’s folder.
What are we learning next week with Mrs. Gosney?
Math- This week the math 5 students will continue working on order of operations and the math 5/6 students will begin working with this topic. There will be a test for both groups by the end of the week.
Science- This week we are finishing the review of the fourth grade SOL of watersheds. Students will be given a task this week to research ways that mining can hurt the earth and then come up with solutions to diminish these effects. Their research will be presented in an essay form or they can choose to make a presentation. This is due next Sunday, October 25. We will also be beginning our exploration of the 5th grade SOL of Oceans soon.
