Math:
We will be learning about even, odd, prime, and composite numbers. I know most fifth graders know even and odd numbers, but prime and composite are new to most this year. However, I will be looking for a specific way to define an even and odd number this year and your child will need to be able to explain and draw pictures to prove why a number is even or odd. This standard does allow use of a calculator, so don't fret if they pull one out to use at home! It is actually encouraged.
Reading:
We will begin a little rotation work this week. Your child will be working with a partner to complete a classmate interview and then will create a slideshow to introduce them to our class. They will also be doing various reading activities as well as meeting with me so I can get to know them as a reader. At home, you can help by encouraging a love of reading. This can be reading of any kind, even audiobooks! Did you know that even listening to a story increases a child's comprehension and vocabulary! So, if your child is a resistant reader, download Henrico Library's app and get them hooked on a great audiobook!
