Virtual Norms and Expectations
Before School:
Our virtual school day starts at 8:10 a.m., so it may be wise for your child to begin to log in around 8:05 to ensure that the computer is ready to go.
- Eat breakfast and use the bathroom before class starts.
- Have a designated work space with materials there and ready each day.
- Begin the day with a fully charged computer and have the computer charger nearby.
- Show up dressed appropriately in accordance with the dress code.
Class Time:
To help your child keep up with their schedule, I suggest a timer or physical print out of a schedule with a digital clock for them to use. A lot of students respond positively to setting timers and alarms to help them go through their assignments and their day.
Here are some suggested alarm times:
8:05 a.m. - Homeroom
9:30 a.m. - Switch classes
12:40 p.m. - Return to homeroom
1:50 p.m. - Resource
2:30 p.m.- Homeroom Checkout
Show up to each class each day on time. Sign in to the meeting using the name we will call you and your last initial. When you enter class you may greet your teacher and classmates. When the teacher begins instruction, mute your microphone and remain muted until the teacher calls on you.
- During class, remain focused on the lesson and on the screen, do not use other apps or play other games unless specifically instructed by the teacher.
- Appropriate participation is expected.
- Chat should only be used for appropriate teacher questions and/or responses, not social chatting with classmates.
- Use the hand button to raise your hand to ask/answer a question. This is not an automatic button and your teacher can not put your hand down for you, please put your hand down after you have been acknowledged.
We have a five minute break built into our schedule between classes. Please use these breaks to grab a snack or drink, use the restroom, and log into your next class. Use the longer break of recess and lunch to take a break from your computer!
- Make sure to get up and move, eat a snack, and use the bathroom during breaks.
- Keep an eye on your timer during breaks and make sure to be back with your camera turned on before the timer runs out. After your first break, you will be logging into your other teacher's class. Don't worry, we will always remind you where you should rejoin when break is over.
- Lunch and recess are on your own. Enjoy! During lunch and recess, the meetings will end. Students are expected to log back into their homeroom class on time.
Independent Work Time
- You should complete all assigned work independently. Some time will be set aside for you to complete your work during the school day, but you should always check the Assignment Board at the end of the day to make sure that you have completed the classwork for the day.
- While our virtual class meetings end at 2:35, you will have assignments to complete independently. You should try your best to use the time block between 2:35-3:15 to complete this work, so if you have questions, you can message me through Schoology or come back into our class meeting. My office hours end at 3:30 and I can not guarantee you will get an answer to your question until the next day if I receive it later. You may also have meetings scheduled with teachers during this time.
- Some days Mrs. Harrington and I will also have meetings with other teachers or administrators so if you aren’t let back into class, send a message through Schoology and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
Homework:
- Mrs. Harrington and I plan to assign very little homework other than studying previously learned material for assessments.
- Inform your teacher beforehand if you know you will not be able to attend class.
- If you are absent, it is expected that you watch the recordings of the classes you missed, if available, and complete all the work missed for that class or day.
Technology:
- If you have difficulty getting to the meeting, or if you get kicked out of a class meeting, clear your cache, and reclick the link to try to rejoin. If this does not work, message that teacher through Schoology and let them know. You may work on your independent practice work if your internet connection allows. Periodically, try to rejoin the class by retrying the link.
- If the teacher seems to accidentally leave the meeting, remain in the meeting and wait for the teacher to return. If she doesn’t return within two to five minutes, look for a message in Schoology from the teacher. Something has happened with her internet connection and computer and she will attempt to rejoin you from her phone or some other way.
