Important Dates and Events:
Monday, 9/21- Learning Packet Pick-up from SPES (Please refer to Mrs. Smith’s email for more details)
Thursday, 9/24- Back to School Night- Please join Mrs. Gosney and myself as we share important information about 5th grade. Use the following link to Join Microsoft Teams Meeting at 6:30 p.m. We will be presenting together, so there is no need to try to catch a time to see both teacher’s presentations. Just like in a regular Back to School night, your child does not have to be present for this. If you can’t make it, no worries, we will record the session to view at your convenience.
Friday, 9/25-Fun in Fifth Friday! (our theme for this Friday will be revealed on Monday!)
Remember, you can always find the class calendar for Mrs. Toth and myself on the left hand menu on my webpage. Just click "Calendar-Fifth Grade"
Technology Issues
If you find that your child is still having trouble with some of the technology, here is a great presentation that may be helpful. Mrs. Bernhart will be updating this presentation as issues arise, so you may want to bookmark it on your device.
What are we learning next week with Mrs. Gosney?
Math- We will finish up our study of even, odd, prime, and composite numbers with a Nearpod activity on Monday and follow up with a test on Tuesday. After that we will begin a study of Integers. Students will learn about how numbers can be positive and negative, how to compare them and how absolute value works. Students can use their interactive notebook in Google Drive to study. There are a few pages that include a game they can play with someone or a few pages they can work on in the work packets being sent home on Monday. Keys have been provided for you to use to check.
Science- There will be a quiz on Wednesday that covers the layers of the Earth and plate tectonics. Study guides are in the interactive notebook in Google Drive. After the quiz, we will begin studying the rock cycle.
What are we learning next week with Mrs. Toth?
Reading- We kicked off our exploration of the genres of fiction by playing an interactive Kahoot game. We will continue our exploration this week. Students will be asked to define and identify examples of books that fit into each genre. A study guide will be provided in the learning kit that will go home on Monday. The guide is also available virtually in your child’s Virtual Reading Response Notebook. Students will have an assessment on the genres of fiction on Friday, September 25th. I will continue to meet 1 on 1 with students to assess their reading strengths and areas for growth.
English- We will go through the steps of the writing process to complete our first piece together. We will focus on brainstorming and pre-writing strategies and continue adding to our virtual writing seeds journals.
Social Studies- We will continue to explore the geography of Henrico. Students will participate in a few interactive activities to showcase their understanding and will have a brief assessment on Thursday, Sept. 24th. They should study the slideshow located in Schoology to prepare for the assessment.
